Remember Bumblebee? You should, it’s only 4 years old. It was a Transformers movie that ditched most of the robots and traded in some of the spectacle for character development. It had a fun story, a great cast, and was generally seen as a huge step up from Michael Bay’s efforts. Well, the trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is here, and it looks like most of those lessons were thrown out the window.
It’s the holiday season so let’s look at the bright side first. One, Michael Bay’s only attached as a producer. And two, my kid’s gonna be thrilled there is a robot cheetah. It combines his 2 favorite things into one easily purchasable package. Plus the director, Steven Caple Jr. did a great job with Creed II. Those are all good things! On the other hand, there are 5 credited writers. That’s never, ever a good sign for a movie. And then there’s the synopsis.
Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ’90s globetrotting adventure and introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.
Suggesting it’ll be like the Bay movies and introducing no less than 3 new kinds of robots in a single movie doesn’t fill me with hope. But who knows? Maybe having both action and spectacle will do the trick.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts arrives in theaters June 9, 2023.
