Festival season means an avalanche of promos and trailers hitting our screens. Here are a few that dropped this week.

Blue Bayou in theaters September 17th

Writer/director/star Justin Chon has created a quintessentially 21st-century American family drama. Antonio LeBlanc (Chon), a Korean adoptee raised in a small town in the Louisiana bayou, is married to the love of his life Kathy (Alicia Vikander), and step-dad to their beloved daughter Jessie. Struggling to make a better life for his family, he must confront the ghosts of his past when he discovers that he could be deported from the only country he has ever called home.

This looks like a real heartbreaker, folks. Have your tissues handy.

CRYPTOZOO in theaters and streaming August 20th

CRYPTOZOO features the voice talents of Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan, Michael Cera, Louisa Krause, Peter Stormare, Thomas Jay Ryan, Grace Zabriskie and Angeliki Papoulia, with vibrant, fantastical animation by comic book writer/artist/filmmaker Dash Shaw. The story follows cryptozookeepers through a richly drawn hallucinatory world as they struggle to capture a baku (a legendary dream-eating hybrid creature) and begin to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a zoo or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown. Does anyone remember MTV’s Liquid Television? This feels like it would have been right at home in that late-night programming block.

Memoria premiers at Cannes this weekend, and will be released later this year

Writer/Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul teams up with Tilda Swinton to bring us this unsettling story about a Scottish woman, who, after hearing a loud ‘bang’ at daybreak, begins experiencing a mysterious sensory syndrome while traversing the jungles of Colombia. That’s it, that’s all I’ve got about this one and the trailer is not very forthcoming. But, I trust Swinton to keep us engaged. It’s always fascinating to watch her work, especially in off-kilter projects like this one.

Habit streaming and in theaters August 20th

Habit stars Bella Thorne, Paris Jackson, and Josie Ho as foul-mouthed L.A.party girls who get mixed up with Gavin Rossdale being a real creepy dude. The girls lose his drugs and money and come up with a plan to masquerade as nuns to raise funds to pay him back. Oh yeah, this one has nothing to do with awards season. It looks like A Lot. I can’t say it will be good, but it will probably be a fun ride.
