Given his immense influence on the entirety of science-fiction and horror, it’s kind of surprising that there are so few adaptations of the work of H.P. Lovecraft. Granted, his tales of cosmic annihilation would typically require massive budgets beyond what Hollywood is willing to invest in, and also Lovecraft was a racist piece of sh*t so let’s not bolster his reputation any further. Then again, when you heard the sentence ‘Nic Cage to star in a Lovecraft adaptation’, you have to admit that you got a wee bit excited.

Color out of Space is one of Lovecraft’s most intriguing stories: A meteorite crashes in the small town of Arkham, Massachusetts, poisoning and deforming everything around it via a color that nobody has ever seen before. How do you bring that to the big screen? Director Richard Stanley’s done just that, and you can watch the trailer below.

Color Out of Space follows the Gardner family and their first-hand experience with this alien force as it crashes onto their farm. Nicolas Cage is the patriarch who just wants a quiet life milking his alpacas, while Joely Richardson is his wife, Tommy Chong is their neighbor, and Q’orianka Kilcher is the nosey town mayor. I saw this one at TIFF and it is a hell of a lot of fun. If you wanted a Cage balance between Face/Off and Mandy, this is for you. Yes, he does excitedly milk an alpaca.

The movie will drop in theaters January 24, 2020.
