The first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer was focused almost entirely on the Guardians of the Galaxy, much to the dismay of everyone who finds Chris Pratt’s continued popularity inexplicable. That makes this newest sneak peek all the more interesting. It’s focused entirely on Thor and his fellow Gods, including an empowered Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Christian Bale as Gorr, the God Butcher.
From Simba’s Circle of Life tree to the frozen tundra and then a monochrome land, where I hope Taika set an entire battle scene, we get a good look at the setup this time around. For those out of the know, Gorr the God Butcher was born millennia ago on a distant rock. Its brutal environment killed his family one by one, and after the death of his final child, Gorr was cast from his tribe for denying the existence of the gods. To his shock, Gorr discovered two gods battling to the death. He grabbed the dark god Knull’s sword and it transformed him into a being capable of murdering deities. Gorr swore vengeance on all the omnipotent beings across the multiverse and cut a bloody swathe through their ranks before being defeated by Thor approximately 1,000 years ago. He has since hidden, marshaling his strength and forces, before striking out again at the selfish gods who let the lesser beings — us — suffer and die. At least, that’s the history we’ve learned since his first appearance in 2012. It remains to be seen what changes Taika Waititi makes to the story.
We also get a look at Jane Foster’s Thor as she kicks an impressive amount of ass. Apparently, she can use the reformed Mjolnir as a hammer or a shotgun, which is impressive. Original Flavor Thor certainly thinks so, and it’s obvious his crush remains fully intact. It’s great to see Valkyrie front and center. It’s interesting to me that while the men in his life only make things more complicated — Loki, Odin, Fury, Stark — Thor is always improved by the women in his life.
Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters July 8.
