Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Hugh Grant, Josh Hartnett, and Cary Elwes sound more like 5 names picked from a hat than actors I’d expect to see in the same movie, but I’m still excited for Guy Ritchie’s latest. Operation Fortune features Statham as super spy Orson Fortune, out to stop billionaire baddy Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant) from selling a new weapon system. Plaza, Elwes, and Bugzy Malone are fellow agents helping Fortune recruit A-list actor Danny Francesco (Hartnett) for the mission. It sounds ridiculous in the best possible way and the trailer seems to bear that out.

I’ve got enough of a man crush on Jason Statham that I’ll watch him in anything. According to Google, the only movie he’s been in that I haven’t seen is Gnomeo & Juliet, and I’m one of the 12 people on the planet who watched The Mechanic: Resurrection. The only one I really regret is In the Name of the King. Never bet on Uwe Boll. All that said, Operation Fortune looks good! Ritchie and Statham are always worth watching when they work together, even if they’re still chasing that Snatch high. And Aubrey Plaza stretching out the word “sexually” like that was icing on the cake.

Originally intended for an early 2022 release, the film was pulled from the schedule last February due to concerns that having Ukrainian gangsters as Simmonds’ henchmen would seem insensitive given the Russian invasion. Fortunately, Lionsgate purchased the distribution rights and we’ll soon get to see what Ritchie and Statham have to offer. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre sneaks into theaters on March 3.
