The Live-Action 'Mulan' Gets a PG-13 Rating and It's Not That Big of a Deal

The highly-anticipated live-action adaptation for Mulan is unlike any of Disney’s previous live-action remakes. For one, it’s not a musical like its animated counterpart was (sadly, there will be no rendition of “Reflection”). Yet another thing that sets Mulan apart from Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and other Disney remakes is that it’s the first to receive a PG-13 rating. Yup, all of the previous live-action films were PG.

That’s significant for Disney, but it’s important to note that Mulan is more of a war epic than a fairy tale, anyway, so it makes sense that the action and brutality of battle would garner a PG-13 rating. Mulan is also the first Disney film (that isn’t a Marvel movie) to get a PG-13 rating since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Motion Picture Association of America (better known as the MPAA) gave Mulan a higher rating specifically for “sequences of violence,” so it tracks. If you’re concerned with whether this will affect parents taking their young kids to see this film, I doubt the rating will have much of an impact on its box office numbers.

After all, the animated Mulan also featured a lot of war and fighting and, though they never showed the bodies, an entire village had been killed by the Huns before the rest of the soldiers had arrived. Can’t expect Mulan to tell its story without the occasional sword fighting and explosion, right?

Mulan hits theaters on March 27.
