I’m a huge fan of Denzel Washington. I’m not sure I know anyone who isn’t. I also enjoy Antoine Fuqua’s work. He’s a good director. I appreciate the fact that these two enjoy working together. However, I have to say that I don’t think The Equalizer needs another sequel.
Am I going to watch it anyway? Absolutely. This franchise is just a big-screen procedural. I love those, but there are definitely other things Denzel could be doing that I would be more excited about.
As recently as last year there were rumors that Washington wanted to play King Lear on Broadway. Where did that project go? Yes, yes I know Glenda Jackson just did it in 2019. But when has that ever stopped Broadway before? Let the man be Lear!
Something else Denzel might want to consider is popping in on Queen Latifah’s successful CBS reimagining of the original TV series. Have you seen it? She’s good! The script leans heavily into cheesy morality lessons, but I love watching Latifah beat up on bad guys every week. She fills Edward Woodward’s shoes well and holds her own against both his and Denzel’s portrayals of Rob McCall. He could just stop by. Maybe he’s a cousin? Maybe there are multiple Equalizers. Every city should have one.
I digress. What we’re getting this fall is the third, and final, entry into the Fuqua/Washington Equalizer franchise. The Equalizer in Italia!
The Equalizer 3 cast also includes David Denman (The Office), Sonia Ammar (Scream). And the movie gets bonus points for creating a Man On Fire reunion by adding Dakota Fanning.
The Equalizer 3 will be released in theaters this September.
