Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen AND Jake Johnson As A Down-And-Out Spider-Man? HOOK IT TO MY VEINS!

Tobey Maguire. Andrew Garfield. Jake Johnson? That’s right. The New Girl star best known for his sexy slacker vibe and cynical sense of humor is the latest actor to be cast as Spider-Man in Sony’s other new spin on the thrice rebooted character, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. But that’s not all! In this animated adventure The Get Down’s Shameik Moore also gets to play Spider-Man, specifically Miles Morales. And just when you think this couldn’t get any cooler, Hailee Steinfeld swings into things as Spider-Gwen!

WASN’T THAT AMAZING!? The animation style is distinctive, seeming like a blend of Marvel comics and The Incredibles/Pixar style. The heart is there, both with Miles’ radiant eagerness to do good, and the wonder of the moment where he soars down into the city, free-falling but fearless. (“Brooklyn!”) The humor is so human, from Spidey teasing a swinging Miles to his dad embarrassing him out on the school steps. AND JAKE JOHNSON AS A SCRUFFY, BROKE, FRIES-SCARFING PETER PARKER IS EVERYTHING I DIDN’T KNOW I NEEDED.

THR has revealed Lily Tomlin joins the cast as Peter Parker’s beloved Aunt May, and Liev Schreiber lends his gravely tones to the villainous Kingpin. Brian Tyree Henry voices Miles’ cop-dad, while Luna Lauren Velez plays the boy’s mom. His uncle Aaron (portrayed by Donald Glover in Spider-Man: Homecoming) is voiced by Moonlight’s Academy Award winner, Mahershala Ali. So you know that’ll be a juicy role.

Lego Movie makers Phil Lord and Chris Miller executive produced Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, along with Sony’s Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Stan Lee. This animated enticer is a continuation of the Marvel/Sony collaboration that led to Spidey swinging into the MCU. So does that mean that this movie is in the MCU continuity? That is currently unclear. This might be an alternate universe version of the Spider-Man story. We do know it’s the 2014 Spider-Verse storyline that played out across several Marvel comic titles. And we know that it’s bold and beautiful. So, we’re sold.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse hits theaters December 14.
