I get it. There are too many reboots. We just want new stories, good stories, instead of seeing our favorites chewed up, spit out, and looking less and less like the thing that we once loved. When I initially read that Ryan Reynolds was producing a Home Alone “revise,” I expected the worst. But, when Deadline reported that it was a blending of Home Alone’s classic appeal with the hard R comedy that Reynolds has perfected with Deadpool, and I will admit that my ears perked up.
Reynolds will be lending his star power as a producer for the project, and Augustine Frizzell, a relatively new director with only a few credits under her belt, will be behind the camera. I may be too easily pleased, but this sounds like a good time.
Stoned Alone is reminiscent of that hallowed comedy classic. It centers around a twenty-something weed growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting high. Paranoia sets in and he believes he hears someone break into his house. Turns out thieves have broken in. Fully stoned and fueled by paranoia, he tries to thwart the thieves and defend his castle.
As long as we aren’t expected to accept someone other than Macauley Culkin as McCallister, I’m on board. Still, a Culkin cameo could be fun. The hunted becomes the hunter, perhaps. There’s speculation that Reynolds will star as well, but as handsome and charming as he is, the man isn’t a twentysomething anymore.
I don’t know. I’ve been very wrong before, but I will definitely watch this.***
