I learned so much watching A Very Jonas Christmas Movie:
There’s a fourth Jonas Brother! (The Bonus Jonas?)
Will Ferrell’s children are huge, like giants.
KJ Apa is from New Zealand!
Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) had a career as a pop star in China before she started acting. Here’s the link to a YouTube playlist of her songs.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson makes a passable Santa Claus! Kinda.
This is actually a pretty cute, funny Christmas movie. I’m chalking it up to the overpowered cast of featured actors, including Will Ferrell’s whole family, Chloe Bennet, Billie Lourd, Laverne Cox, Randall Park, Andrea Martin, KJ Apa, and Kenny G. I’m not sure why any of these folks agreed to be in this movie (besides the Disney+ paycheck), but I’m glad they were.
If Disney+ had a skip button for all of the songs they sing, I would have enjoyed this one for what it is. I’ve never been a Jonas fan, and honestly, I am not sure which one is which. But Joe Jonas gives big Divorced Dad energy in A Very Jonas Christmas Movie so I knew he was Ex-Mister-Sansa-Stark right away. I still spent a lot of time on Google trying to figure out which of the other two was Kevin (the one who still lives in New Jersey) and which was Nick (the responsible one). And then the introduction of Bonus Jonas completely threw me. I did not see that coming.
A Very Jonas Christmas Movie is a road trip comedy about The Bros trying to get home from their European tour in time for Christmas. A lot of the focus is on Joe, who is depressed that the tour is over, and his brothers are excited to get back to their own families instead of spending Christmas with him. See what I mean about Divorced Dad energy? Joe unknowingly gets into a conversation with Santa (Ferguson) at a bar, and Santa casts a Christmas Spirit spell to force them to spend the holiday together.
Chaos and romance ensue!
It’s not A Hard Day’s Night, but the Jonas Brothers have been performing for a long time. They have natural chemistry together, and they’re very comfortable on camera. The dialogue between them feels almost natural at times. And they surrounded themselves with funny people who were not afraid to go big with their characterizations. Billie Lourd, Randall Park, and KJ Apa in particular were over-the-top ridiculous, and brought the necessary big energy that kept A Very Jonas Christmas Movie from taking itself seriously.
When I saw the ad for this movie, I thought it was about ten years too late to capitalize on the brothers’ popularity. And maybe it is. But that shouldn’t stop any of us from enjoying their silly little adventure, ironically or not. I don’t want sequels, and I’m absolutely not watching the A Very Jonas Christmas Movie Yule Log Disney+ is also pushing. But I didn’t hate this. I’m as shocked as you are.
