You Love Other Spielberg Movies, So Why Not 'Ready Player One'?

After unveiling a poster that was roundly ridiculed, Ready Player One’s looking to rebound with a featurette that basically says, “You like ET, Indiana Jones and Back to the Future? Then come oooooooooooooonnnnnnn!”

The novel’s author, Ernest Cline, is an admitted fanboy for the iconic director. And in the video below, the pair become a mutual admiration society, with Cline explaining how Spielberg movies inspired Ready Player One, then Spielberg gushes over how this story that’s inspired his movies is pretty brilliant stuff. Cool cool. Does it make any of you want to see the movie though?

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Is this a safe place to confess I tried twice to read Ready Player One, and quit twice over boredom? Kayleigh made it through, but decided it’s everything wrong with geek culture. What say you? Are looking forward to Spielberg’s homage to himself? Or are you dreading this Spielberg turducken?

Ready Player One opens March 30th in 2D, 3D, and IMAX.
