The DCEU hasn’t had a great run of it so far, and post-Justice League, it felt like everything was ready to fall apart. I’ve previously argued that Warner Bros. needed to fully embrace the F—k It phase of the franchise and just go hard on the silliness. We may get that with Aquaman, which has been described as a self-aware vibrant fun-fest with shades of Jupiter Ascending. Every new set photo from that Joker movie has me more intrigued (if it’s just Joaquin Phoenix running around New York, Tom Cruise style, in a clown outfit, I’m all there). And then there’s Shazam!
The concept is silly — a teenage boy gains the ability to turn into an adult superhero whenever he says ‘Shazam’, thanks to an ancient wizard — but couldn’t we all use a bit more daft glee in our superhero stories these days? Especially in the DCEU? That trailer was also damn good fun, and the concept of ‘It’s Big but with capes’ is something I’m surprised we haven’t seen before.
And the new poster leans into the fun of it all, although we’re sure there are other hidden meanings to that glint in Zachary Levi’s eye.
As Kristy said during our Overlords secret meetings, we feel like this poster would be considered adult content by Tumblr, despite the serious lack of female presenting nipples.
Shazam! comes out on April 5th 2019, and features Levi, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer from It, Ian Chen from Fresh Off the Boat, and Djimon Hounsou doing double franchise duties.
