Dwayne Johnson’s domination over Hollywood continues with Hobbs and Shaw, a planned spin-off from the wildly successful Fast and Furious franchise. He’ll be joined by Jason Statham for some more automotive criminal shenanigans that will be speedy and angry. Joining them in this escapade will be Idris Elba, because it’s only fair that he’s in every movie. Elba will reportedly play the main antagonist of the film, wherein he will be charming, handsome, talented and hopefully making lots of dirty puns about cars.
The Fast and Furious franchise surprised everyone by becoming not only a beloved and highly profitable franchise but one that’s won over critics with its increasingly bonkers stunts and high-concept storytelling. It’s currently the 7th highest grossing franchise ever, with $5.1bn in worldwide grosses, putting it above Batman, Spider-Man and the DCEU. It’s also a franchise coming to the end of its life, and the smart money is on Johnson to keep the engines running. We’re sorry, Vin Diesel. I mean, Johnson isn’t sorry, but we’re sure someone is.
Production is set to begin in September, with a planned release date of August 2019.
