It’s a-me, the box office report lady. Over the Easter weekend, families across America celebrated the occasion with that most revered of idols, the Italian plumber who sounds like Chris Pratt. Seriously, Peach, why choose him over Jack Black again? The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had one hell of an opening, with an impressive $190 million over five days. That makes it the biggest domestic opening of 2026. Its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, opened to $146.3 million domestically in 2023. It’s already taken in $372.4 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of the year so far. Given that the first one was the second highest-earning movie of its year, crossing $1 billion, expect this one to do well over the coming weeks.
The Drama brought, well, the drama. A24’s latest, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, landed at number three with an impressive $14.3 million. That’s good news for the distributor and stars, especially Zendaya, who continues to prove herself as a major power player not to be messed with.
At number six is A Great Awakening. Surprisingly, it’s not a movie about Jesus and Easter. It’s actually about the friendship between George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin, the former of whom was one of the founders of Methodism. Yes, it’s a religious movie, made by a company that largely specializes in stage productions of Bible stories. So it’s still holiday appropriate. It earned $2,113,565.
In limited release news: The Stranger, an adaptation of the Albert Camus novel, grossed $20,500 from two locations; and The Blue Trail, a Brazilian dystopian drama starring Rodrigo Santoro, took in $7,949.
This coming week sees the release of the rom-com You, Me & Tuscany and the horror reboot Faces of Death.
