Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a record breaker can. Whatever audience fatigue there may be for Marvel in other corners of pop culture, it hasn’t hit Peter Parker. Spider-Man: Brand New Day saw an astonishingly good opening weekend. How good? Try $355 million domestically from 4,487 theatres. That’s a per-location average of $79,117! To put that in perspective, The Odyssey has earned $395.5 million in the space of three weeks. If you had stocks in Tom Holland and Zendaya, you’re living on easy street now.

Worldwide, the movie has taken in over $927 million. That gives it the second-biggest opening weekend ever. Spidey’s always been a big money-maker for Sony, which is why they’ll never sell it off to Marvel Studios. Spider-Man: No Way Home came very close to breaking the $2 billion mark. It seems all but guaranteed that this installment will get there.

With both Brand New Day and The Odyssey on track to earn at least $1 billion each, we could see one of the biggest box office runs since pre-COVID times. So far, we have three films that have earned ten figures, and we have Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part III on the horizon. And that doesn’t even take into account indie hits like Obsession. Well done, Hollywood. Now, bin all the AI slop and start paying your workers fairly.

Off the beaten web, we had I Want Your Sex, a raunchy comedy from indie icon Gregg Araki. That one earned $600,000 from 700 cinemas. The Samurai and the Prisoner, a Japanese historical drama, took in $64,200 from three cinemas; and and Wild Inside, a documentary about Flaco, an owl who escaped Central Park Zoo in 2023 and became an icon in the process, grossed $20,000.

This coming week sees the release of the horror Ice Cream Man, comedy sequel Super Troopers 3, and romantic drama One Night Only.
