Is it blockbuster season yet? We’re now officially in the post-Oscar season, which means it’s time to expect more IPs, sequels, reboots, and tentpole flicks. Well, more so than the other parts of the year. But hey, if this is the opening of the season (and the so-called Summer of franchise fare is vaster than ever), how cool that it kicks off with something that isn’t a sequel, reboot, remake, or foundation for an expanded universe.
Project Hail Mary, based on the novel and directed by Lord and Miller, opened to a strong $80.5 million. That’s good news for Amazon MGM Studios as well as Ryan Gosling, who has a big leading man success to his name. See, you are Kenough.
Pixar’s Hoppers is holding strong in its third week of release, with $120.3 million to its name domestically. With $242.6 million in the bank worldwide, it’s currently the second highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far. The frontrunner? A Chinese sports comedy called Pegasus 3, which is about racecar drivers and friendship.
At number three is Dhurandhar The Revenge, an Indian spy thriller that is straight-up described as propaganda on Wikipedia. It grossed $13.5 million from 987 theatres.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come already has claim to one of the best movie titles of 2026. You’d have been super disappointed if they hadn’t gone that route, right? The horror comedy scared up $9.1 million from 3,010 locations.
Tow, a drama starring recent Oscar nominee Rose Byrne, is based on the true story of an unhoused woman who took on a tow company that tried to screw her over. It took in $131,020 from 180 places.
In more limited release news: Sofia Coppola made a documentary about her friend, the fashion designer Marc Jacobs. Marc by Sofia earned $46,849 from two cinemas; German director Christian Petzold’s latest drama, Mirrors No. 3, earned $36,666; the historical drama Palestine ‘36 took in $36,043 from one theatre; drama Late Shift made $14,300; the horror comedy Late Shift has $13,500 from one place (complete with a Stink-O-Vision gimmick!); and the historical drama Two Prosecutors, about a Soviet lawyer seeking justice for a political prisoner during Stalin’s Great Purge, made $13,300.
This coming week sees the release of the frenetic action movie They Will Kill You, the comedy horror Forbidden Fruits, and the drama Our Hero, Balthazar.
