Box Office Report: Moana Remake Underperforms

I must admit that I expected the live-action remake of Moana to do pretty well at the box office this past weekend. Sure, the Disney remake herd is thinning and it seemed way too soon to redo something that is barely a decade old, but it’s a beloved multi-billion-dollar property that kids love and surely they’d want more? Well, that didn’t exactly happen. Disney had projected that this Moana would earn about $60 million domestically. Instead, it only brought in $43 million. Worldwide, it’s only scraped together about $95 million. That’s not great given that its budget is reported to be around $250 million. Reviews were bad and, yes, it seemed that it was too soon for this remake.

Moana still earned enough to land at the top of the box office but only because the competition wasn’t there. Last week’s victor, Minions & Monsters, had a softer-than-expected opening and saw a 44% drop from that premiere. It’s one of the best reviewed in the franchise but the kids just aren’t interested. In fairness, there’s a World Cup on and the weather is hot. We’re busy.

At number four is Evil Dead Burn, the gnarly violent horror sequel, with $13.7 million from 3,004 cinemas. At number 11 is the comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, starring Zoey Deutsch, with $953,724 from 1,000 theatres.

In limited news: the thriller Night Nurse earned $72,000 from 330 places; Reading Lolita in Tehran, a drama based on the book of the same name, grossed $15,000 from one place; comedy The Floaters made $8,500, as did the documentary Remake.

This coming week sees the release of The Odyssey. Seems like it could be a big deal.
