Nothing was ever going to stop Michael from being a mega-hit. Not the terrible reviews. Not Michael Jackson’s own reputation. Not the harried and costly reshoots designed to reinforce a propagandistic worldview. And certainly not all the victims who have bravely come forward. The movie faced zero real competition in its opening weekend, and it easily soared to a $97 million debut. That’s big for a biopic. Worldwide, it’s already crossed the $217 million threshold. This one’s going to get even bigger. Alas.
Project Hail Mary passed $300 million domestically, with Amazon MGM Studios savvily deciding to keep it in theatres to build upon great word of mouth rather than pulling it prematurely to get it on their streaming platform. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is also holding on strong, now at $386.4 million in North America. It has soared past Pegasus 3 to become the highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far, with $831.4 million to its name. Ya-hoo.
At number eight is the horror comedy Over Your Dead Body, with $1.42 million from 1,550 theatres. That put it just above Mother Mary, which added 1,000 locations to its run and saw a 645% boost in earnings. It’s still a niche movie and one that may struggle to hold on as bigger films, including other Anne Hathaway joints, enter the fray.
Behind that is American Youngboy, a concert tour movie centred on a rapper known as YoungBoy Never Broke Again. I have no idea who he is but his Wikipedia page is a wild read. Certainly, he’s popular enough to bring in $1.19 million from 583 locations.
Fuze, a thriller starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, grossed $1.01 million. Behind that is I Swear, the biopic of Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner John Davidson, made $640,000 from 645 theatres. Then behind that one is Desert Warrior, starring Anthony Mackie, which took in $472,111.
The first rule of fight clubs is that, when it has an anniversary re-release, you don’t start a punch-up in the cinema. You leave that for the car park. David Fincher’s cult favourite beat its way to a $219,000 intake.
This coming week sees the release of Andy Serkis’s remake of Animal Farm, Lucrecia Martel’s excellent documentary Our Land, and the fashion sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2.
