It’s early March. The dump seasons are over. We’re not quite into the big blockbuster territory yet, but you can see the studios dipping their toes into the cold waters. Pixar has had a spotty run lately, but their latest movie, Hoppers, earned solid reviews and easily took the top spot at the box office over the weekend. From 4,000 theatres, it earned $46 million. That’s the studio’s biggest debut for an original movie since 2017’s Coco. Like Disney, Pixar’s doubled down on sequels lately, so it’s always a positive sign when audiences come out for something that isn’t an established IP.

Things weren’t so hot for The Bride! Maggie Gyllenhaal’s wild horror-romance reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein story received very divisive reviews. You either love it or think it’s a disaster. I loved it, because of course I did. Alas, it was always going to be a hard sell for wide audiences, and it only landed at number three with $7.26 million from 3,304 cinemas. It’ll probably be a financial disappointment for Warner Bros. Good. Let Zaslav suffer.

At number 12 is Protector, an action thriller starring Milla Jovovich, with a paltry $744,024 from 1,007 places. Dolly, a horror movie with a truly upsetting poster, landed at number 16, taking in $480,000 from 810 theatres.

The Oscars happen this coming Sunday, so audiences are checking out some of the nominees. Sirat, one of the Best International Feature nominees, grossed $353,055 from 144 theatres. Hamnet is close to grossing $23.9 million domestically. Marty Supreme could cross $96 million by the end of the week.

This coming week sees the release of another Colleen Hoover adaptation, Reminders of Him, and the horror movie Undertone.
