A24 broke a record with their highest-grossing opening weekend last week thanks to Civil War. Alex Garland’s dystopian drama signaled a positive step forward for the beloved indie studio as it hopes to move into more mainstream-friendly commercial prospects. They’ll be happy to see that Civil War held onto the top spot for a second week, even with a 56.4% drop from its premiere. Its $11.12 million weekend earnings brought its domestic gross to over $44.8 million. Good job, guys. Now stop using AI for your posters.

The vampire movie Abigail was the winner in terms of new releases this past weekend, but takings were slimmer than expected and it couldn’t overtake Civil War. It brought in $10.2 million from 3,384 theatres, which put it ahead of Guy Ritchie’s latest action fare, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Despite solid reviews, the Lionsgate picture only scraped together a $9 million opening from 2,845 cinemas.

Anime continues to be a solid bet, as proven by Crunchyroll’s latest release, Spy x Family Code: White. It took in $4.875 million from 2,009 theatres because nerds like the cinematic experience. Go, nerds.

Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film, domestically and internationally, of the year so far. Eight weeks into its release, its North American intake has leaped to over $276 million, and its total gross is closing in on $700 million. A reminder that the first film, which had to deal with lockdown and its repercussions, made about $407 million.

In limited releases: Minhal Baig’s drama We Grown Now brought in $36.545 from nine locations; while Theda Hammel’s comedy drama Stress Positions grossed $28,000 from only one theatre.

This coming week sees the release of the sexy tennis drama Challengers.
