Anime is back on top, guys. It wasn’t expected to be a quiet weekend, nor was the anime movie predicted to grab the number one spot. We had an adaptation of a beloved author’s work and a biopic of an iconic musician, but both lost out to a man with a chainsaw. A Chainsaw Man, if you will.

Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc is part of one of the most popular anime/mangas out there right now, and like Demon Slayer, audiences were eager for more. It grossed $17.25 million from just over 3,000 locations. It’s already made $108 million worldwide. But don’t expect it to beat out Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which is still in theatres in Japan and is now the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, with over $666 million to its name.

At number three is Regretting You, adapted from a novel by Colleen Hoover. Despite being one of the biggest-selling writers of the 2020s and a bona fide publishing phenomenon, this one didn’t take off as well as It Ends With Us did. It only grossed $12,85 million from 3,393 cinemas. Is it because the book isn’t as fervently read as It Ends With Us was? Do non-BookTok audiences simply not care about Hoover? Maybe the reviews were just too tepid for skeptics.

I feel like a similar state of apathy fell upon Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, the biopic of The Boss as he made Nebraska. Jeremy Allen White got some strong write-ups for his performance, but reviews were middling, and audiences weren’t interested in this one. So, it only earned $9.1 million from 3,460 places.

At number seven is Shelby Oaks, the found footage horror film and directorial debut of YouTuber Chris Stuckmann, with $2.35 million from 1,830 theatres.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have reunited once more for Bugonia, a remake of the Korean film Save the Green Planet!, which took in $690,000 from 17 theatres. Let’s see how this one does as it expands nationwide. Good luck, babe!

Last Days is a drama based on the true story of a zealous missionary who tried to reach an isolated island community. It didn’t end well. The film is directed by Justin Lin, perhaps best known for his Fast & Furious movies. This one earned $160,970 from 312 places.

Queens of the Dead brings drag to the zombie world, and it scared up $55,525 from 150 places. Slay.

The documentary Mistress Dispeller follows a woman in China who hires a professional to go undercover and break up her husband’s affair in an effort to save her marriage. From only three theatres, it grossed $23,443.

This coming week sees the release of Radu Jude’s Dracula, the nationwide expansion of Bugonia, and a ton of Twilight saga re-releases. Happy Halloween!
