Oh make me over…

To the shock of basically nobody except the most incredibly stupid people, Captain Marvel opened to a staggering $153m domestic weekend at the box office. It averaged about $35,499 from 4310 theatres and the franchise’s seventh largest opening weekend of all time. It’s made more in its first three days than the combined totals of any previous three-day weekend so far this year. And it’s the third highest March opening ever. And it made about another $302m worldwide, the fifth highest international opening weekend ever. So yeah, it did good. Remember that boycott against it because apparently Brie Larson hates white men or something? Remember how they were all going to fight back by going to see noted non-SJW masterpiece Alita: Battle Angel? Boy, that was a close call. For the record, in its fourth week of release, Alita: Battle Angel fell two spots to number five (a 55.7% drop from the previous week) and made $3.2m this weekend.

As expected, nobody really wanted to compete with Carol Danvers’s introduction, so everything else in the top ten took a sizeable hit from the previous week. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, last week’s number one, made $14.69m (a 51% drop); Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral dropped 55.5%; The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is five weeks into its release and has yet to cross the $100m mark, which feels like a big letdown for Warner Bros.

Badla, a Hindi language Indian thriller starring the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, did solid business in a limited run, grossing over $614k from only 94 theatres, while The Kid, A.K.A. that Chris Pratt movie you didn’t know was coming out this week, fared less well with $505k from 268 screens. A24’s newest release, Gloria Bell, starring Julianne Moore, made $154,775 from five theatres and had the second highest per-screen average of the week after Captain Marvel, Very different competition, obviously.

Next week sees the releases of Paramount animation Wonder Park, romantic drama Five Feet Apart, and sci-fi action Captive State.
