It’s January. We’re all cold. It’s dark outside. Awards-y films are preparing to beg for your attention. It’s the perfect time for two things: evil monkey movies and films where Gerard Butler punches something. And lo and behold, Hollywood listened.

But predictably, Avatar: Fire and Ash stayed on the top spot in its fourth week of release. It now has over $342.5 million to its name. It’s now the third highest-grossing movie of 2025, with $1.23 billion to its name. It’ll need an extra push to surpass the $1.65 billion of Zootopia 2, which is still in theatres and still making money. For those checking, three of the highest-grossing films of 2025 were Disney titles.

At number two is Primate, which earned $11.3 million. That was more than enough to put it ahead of Gerry’s latest schlocky sequel, Greenland 2: Migration. That one only managed $8.5 million from a similar number of locations, so it debuted at number five.

In indie and limited-ish release news: Debuting at number 13 is the drama I Was a Stranger, with $1,214,826 from 1,400 cinemas. At number 20 is the new Gus Van Sant film, Dead Man’s Wire, with $154,131 from 14 theatres. The drama All That’s Left of You, about three generations of a Palestinian family, earned $56,074 from one place. Filipino director Lav Diaz’s Magellan, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, grossed $28,300 from two cinemas.

This coming week sees the long-awaited wide release of Hamnet, plus the zombie sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
