Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson Fall In Love And Fight In 'Marriage Story' His/Hers Teasers
Are you ready to get your heart wrecked? Because Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are teaming up with Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story, a relationship drama that’s sure to come in like a wrecking ball.
Written and directed by Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha), Marriage Story stars Driver and Johansson as married couple Charlie and Nicole. He’s a stage director; she’s an actress. And yes, we might speculate that the movie is inspired either by director Baumbach’s marriage to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh (2005-2013). Or perhaps its inspiration is his relationship with Greta Gerwig, his longtime girlfriend and recurring collaborator with whom he had a child earlier this year. Or perhaps both. Or perhaps it’s all totally fictional, and the jobs of these characters are mere co-incidence!
Anyhow, ahead of Marriage Story’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival later this month, Netflix has unveiled not one but two teasers for the much-anticipated drama. A his-and-hers offering.
First up, here’s His: “What I Love About Nicole.”
And here’s Hers: “What I Love About Charlie.”
What I love about the trailers is how they play together. They feature the same song, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” But his version is sung by Otis Redding, while hers is sung by Cat Power. The teasers contain some of the same footage, revealing moments of joy and moments of agony. They also show different footage from the same scenes, like the Monopoly game, an example of both parents being “competitive.” This shows there’s some overlap in Nicole and Charlie’s perception of their marriage. But the differences speak to a wedge growing between them, a wedge that perhaps has to do with being competitive and being in the same industry. Then, notably, both teasers end the same way, with these two—and their perspectives—colliding in a moment simple yet striking:
Her: I thought we should talk.
Him: I don’t know how to start.
That moment. That moment where so much needs to be said that you don’t know where to begin because you don’t know how you might stop. That moment promises to break our hearts.
Marriage Story is coming to select theaters and Netflix this fall.
