The Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association banded together to hand out the 23rd Critics’ Choice Awards last night. Given how most of the awards during Oscar season are handed out by industry guilds and the peers of those being rewarded, the Critics’ Choice side is a fascinating change of pace that allows us to see just how the two side line up on various issues. Generally speaking, they’ve been pretty evenly matched so far, across both film and TV. The big winner of the night was The Shape of Water, which took home awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Score. This has been a good season so far for Guillermo del Toro, although we’re all still a bit too nervous to declare him the front-runner in the Director category. It’s just too weird a season to make any sure bets.

We may have a new Best Supporting Actor front-runner, with Sam Rockwell taking home the award for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri over the apparent dead cert favourite Willem Dafoe. Allison Janney is storming ahead of her closest competitor Laurie Metcalf for Best Supporting Actress, as she won in that category for I, Tonya. Both Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand further secured their front-runner status with wins in their respective categories, and the Best Ensemble award - something the Oscars doesn’t have - went to the Three Billboards cast.

The Critics’ Choice Awards get more interesting after that. Jordan Peele finally got a major award for Get Out in Best Original Screenplay. It also won Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, while The Big Sick won Best Comedy. The awards for comedic acting got a bit… Well, James Franco won. Funnily enough, he wasn’t there to pick up the honour, for reasons I’m sure we’ll never figure out. Today’s the day the voting ends for the Oscar nominations, so you can guess what’s on a lot of people’s minds right now.

In the world of television, things were more easy to predict: The Handmaid’s Tale and Elisabeth Moss won Best Drama and Best Actress in a Drama; Sterling K. Brown continued his stellar awards season for This Is Us; Praise be to Ted Danson for getting some recognition for The Good Place, as well as a much appreciated Supporting Comedy Actor win for Walton Goggins in Vice Principals. And yes, Big Little Lies swept again in the mini-series category, although I’m not sure they can keep calling it that given its upcoming second season.
