2019 may receive an award for being the year that housed the worst Black History Month in the celebration’s existence. Not only did we have the Jussie Smollett v. Chicago Police Department debacle, but South Carolina had Black children picking cotton on a field trip, white boy problems were the cover story for Esquire, and Miley Cyrus is going back to hip-hop. While many have been praying for Beyoncé to come back and give us BHM realness like her Superbowl performances and “Formation” video release have done in the past, it’s her sister who really came through.

In the past 48 hours, Solange Knowles has been on the cover of I-D Magazine, revived the long-forgotten website Black Planet, and is now teasing clips of her latest work. Solange’s last album A Seat at the Table was a cultural touchstone for many Black women with songs like “Don’t Touch My Hair” and lyrics like “This shit is draining, and I’m not really allowed to be mad.” She spoke to the difficult microaggressions, undiagnosed depression, and heartbreak residing within women all over the world.
The music clip posted to her Twitter account has a similar vibe to her previous album. Melodic trance tones mixed with hip-hop beats. Already rumors swirl that an entire visual album could be on the horizon. The video that accompanies the song has Solange’s director’s fingerprints all over it. Groups of women, dressed similarly and uniquely, dance against minimalist backgrounds. The camera slowly pushes in, never invading their space, just hoping to get closer to its subject, studying intently.

After the high of 2018’s Black Panther-infused Black History Month, 2019 has been a supreme letdown. Here’s hoping Solange can save the month in a single day.
