Those of us old enough to remember the feeling of dancing to Usher in public had at least a handful of impure thoughts while watching his recent Super Bowl halftime performance, and I am no different. I’ve heard starry-eyed stories of his concerts basically being public orgasmic events. The man knows his audience and is good to them.
But Usher is getting older now, and even he can admit that he’s pushed the limits a few times.
“Have you seen some of your old moments, like when you were onstage with Nicki Minaj and you were head buttin’ her ass? Why was you so unhinged?” Charlamagne Tha God asked Usher of a 2014 MTV Video Music Awards performance on a recent episode of The Breakfast Club podcast.
@minajnewzealand I jus know him slapping her A$$ wasn’t part of the performance 💀💀 look at her facials #nickiminaj #usher #perform #barbz #viralvideo #foryou #fyp #mustwatch #iconic #icon #tiktokviral @Nicki Minaj @usher ♬ 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready) - Lizzo
Yes, why indeed?
“That was Jamaican culture! So you gotta go to Jamaica. That was just a moment that was fun,” he answered. He tried to make light of it, explaining, “By the way, it was me playing my bass, so I probably wouldn’t bumped my shoulder or my hand, but I had my bass in my hand and I was playing, so I kind of bopped off her body a little bit,” here referring to how, before smacking her butt, he headbutted it, “If you go back and look at the video, you’ll understand because I did it here for the first time.”
Yes, well, the video speaks for itself, Usher. He knows that, though.
“I think I was reaching a bit when I smacked her, though. I shouldn’t have smacked her. I shouldn’t have did that,” he finally admitted.
He also said he has “absolutely” been toxic in his past relationships. “I was taught to be a player,” he explained.
“To be real—toxic is something that I think we all gotta work through. And I did,” he concluded.
