Don’t vape, kids. It’s bad for you, it looks goofy as all hell, and everyone hates being in your presence when you think you’re sneakily taking a seven-second drag off a neon box with a blinking light. But don’t listen to me. Listen to Selena Gomez, who recently took to Instagram to admit that vaping has screwed with her voice.
“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” she admitted. “I vaped nicotine a lot, and just so everyone knows that’s somewhat… vaped. Nicotine is so hard to quit. And I think I just wanted to say if you’re going through it, or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it. It it it’s it’s so stupid and..it changed my voice. So, if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it. Just don’t listen.”
Selena, who has lupus, which can cause inflammation around the larynx, had previously cited her illness as the reason for her voice changing. Fans had noticed the shift and worried about her health. Gomez also let her fans know that she has finally managed to kick the habit. “But I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something you can get through it too. It sucks.”
It does suck! Isn’t it terrifying that we finally saw smoking numbers go down and then capitalism introduced a new way to get addicted that could be more easily marketed to kids and sold as a “healthier” alternative? I teenagers vaping all the damn time and it’s tough to watch, and that doesn’t even get into how many of these bloody vape shops have taken over my city. A recent study from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in the UK has said that vaping “had an association with problems including wheezing and coughing, poor oral and dental health, poor sleep, mental health problems and eye symptoms.” We still don’t know the long-term impacts vaping can have on the body because it’s still a relatively new concept, but surely, at the very least, we can all agree that the implicit marketing of this stuff to children, with all the wacky colours and flavours, is sinister as all hell?
