Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
After a trial that lasted over three weeks, Brand received the verdict in Southwark Crown Court. He faced seven charges: three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of attempted indecent assault. Six women, who shall remain anonymous, came forward with the allegations that spanned a ten-year period between 1999 and 2009.
The presiding judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, told Brand, “given the verdict on count six at least, obviously a custodial sentence of some length will result […] The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term.” He will be remanded into custody until he receives his sentence on Monday.
The prosecution detailed how Brand preyed on women, was “ruthless” in his predatory behaviour, and that the “circumstances of the offending were as wide and as varied as the defendant’s career.” While rumours of Brand’s behaviour were something of an open secret in British media and comedy circles, the extent of his violence was not revealed until an investigation by The Sunday Times and Channel 4 in 2023. That documentary included several women who shared their alleged experiences with Brand, and how the entertainment industry aided and abetted him for years.
Brand denied all allegations of non-consensual acts and tried to argue that the investigation had poisoned the well against him, in part because he’s such a nervy anti-establishment rebel who does things like hang out with Tucker Carlson and spread anti-vax propaganda. His defence, at least in part, failed. He will most certainly spend the next few years in jail.
He may have to return to court in the near future. Brand is being investigated over further rape allegations made by two women, said the Metropolitan Police.
