Meg Stalter is having a moment. She’s just landed her first Emmy nomination for the final season of Hacks (justice for Too Much), she’s released her debut album, and she’s made her Broadway debut taking over the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! Joining Cole Escola’s already-iconic comedy is now a rite of passage for the coolest people on the planet, from Maya Rudolph to Jinkx Monsoon and now Meg.

I like Meg a lot. She’s very funny and is having a ball embodying a pastiche of the kind of self-conscious weirdo party girl image that was everywhere when we were both teens. This also means that she is highly savvy about the internet and how people talk about her. So, when she had to call in sick from Oh, Mary!, she knew that she’d have to put a few people in their places.

Hi guys! I’m so sad to have missed @ohmaryplay shows this week as I’m very very sick with Bronchitis (we are hoping not pneumonia!!) Thank you so much for the incredible @babymcgoo and @hellojacks who are worlds most talented and have stepped in to give you the BEST SHOW!! There’s a whole thread on Reddit I guess about how people think I was at the comedy cellar and I’d just like to go on record saying I was not at the comedy cellar 😀 I’m very sick and have no voice but doing everything I can to be back in the shows this weekend ❤️ love you forever stop saying I was at the comedy cellar please

The Reddit threads she’s talking about are on r/Broadway. They had a lot of posts about Stalter’s absences, seemingly unable to comprehend the notion that people can be ill for a few days in a row. Nope, she had to be chinwagging with those darn comics.

It’s such an odd rumour to spread. In what world would the star of a major Broadway show faking an illness to go to a comedy show not immediately go viral, complete with photographic evidence? If Stalter was at the Comedy Cellar, everyone would have taken pictures. There’s a certain strain of perennially online Broadway conspiracist that believes every performance an actor misses is due to their own diva selfishness. Spreading unsubstantiated rumours, especially in the current climate of tinhat madness, is just asking for problems.

Get well soon, Meg. Drinks at the Comedy Cellar are on Reddit once you’re better.
