A man was arrested and charged with assault this week after throwing his phone at singer Bebe Rexha while she was performing on stage. The 27-year-old assailant, Nicolas Malvagna, flung his mobile at Rexha, hitting her in the eye. The injury required her to be taken to the hospital, where she received three stitches.
Malvagna was charged on Monday with two counts of assault in the third degree, one count of harassment in the second degree, one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree, and one count of attempted assault in the third degree. According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, he confessed to the assault, telling a police officer on the scene, 'I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny.' There is also video of him smiling as he admits to the assault during the concert. He is due back in court on July 1.

Rexha took to Instagram to let fans know she was OK and shared images of the injury.
Seriously, f**k that guy.
You thought it would be 'funny' to assault someone? You thought people would high-five you and congratulate your prowess for injuring the singer they paid good money to see live? Are these losers even aware of how astonishingly stupid this sounds?
It's not uncommon for fans to throw things on-stage to get their favourite performers to pick them up: teddy bears, flags, roses, that sort of thing. Harry Styles gets this a lot. It's also weirdly common for people to just fling their mobile phones up there in the hopes of the artist taking a selfie then passing it back to them. Their phones must be made of the stuff of Nokia 3310s because any iPhone I've ever seen will shatter if the user looks at it funnily.
Some musicians have tried to shut down this behaviour. Steve Lacy went so far as to smash one fan's disposable camera when it was thrown at him. Many singers have been injured from such projectiles, thrown earnestly or otherwise. David Bowie had a lollipop flung at his eye at one gig. And this doesn't even get into the many times that musicians have been attacked or groped while performing, from Oasis to Beyonce.
And let's not downplay what happened to Bebe Rexha here. It was assault. She was left injured. This wasn't a joke. This was a man physically hurting a woman for no other reason than he thought it'd be funny. He's lucky he didn't go after a singer with a scarier fanbase, although I imagine the Rexhars won't forgive and forget.
Don't be this dick.
