Lil Nas X has said he is “doing much better” and feels “less fear in my heart” after a mental health episode that led to him being arrested.
In a video shared with his fans on Instagram, he said that he had “been in rehab for a few months” and then returned home to Atlanta to spend time with hiis family. “I feel like I had known for like the past few years,” he said, regarding his bipolar diagnosis. “But I didn’t want to admit to it because I didn’t want to have to take medication and, I don’t know, have people think different of me.” Ever one for a good joke, he added, “I mean, I’m already black and gay, like, damn, God. Gay, bipolar, like I’m living life on extreme hard mode.”
Last year, Lil Nas was charged with attacking Los Angeles police officers after being found walking the streets in his underwear. The charges were dismissed after he agreed to enter a mental health programme.
Truly, we’re glad to see him doing well. He wasn’t wrong in his comment about playing life on hard mode: he became wildly famous from a song that sparked an entire racist discourse about the nature of country music; he was one of the most prominent out queer voices in music and was treated abysmally for it; and any time he experimented with his sound or imagery in ways that celebrated his status as a Black gay guy, people accused him of witchcraft. It all just made it even more entertaining when he responded by twerking on Satan.
Lil Nas has said “there is new music on the way” and that “I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud.” You’ve always done that, my man. Take your time and you do you.
