“This is a series inspired by my new song, “Used To Be Young,” where I am going to start at the beginning of my life in 1992 until now in 2023, and we’re gonna go through the last 30 years,” is how Miley Cyrus opens the first installment of her “Used To Be Young” TikTok series, which promises to be chock-a-block with quarter-life wisdom.

When looking at the top 100 country songs from the year she was born, including one by her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, she explains, “When I see the numbers I just see the humans behind it enjoying music,” she explains. “I just see people in numbers.”

But…

“My dad grew up the opposite of me, so I think that’s where me and my dad’s relationship to fame and success is wildly different. Him feeling loved by a big audience impacted him emotionally more than it ever could me. When he feels special and important it’s like healing a childhood wound, and I’ve always been made to feel … like a star,” she explains. “It makes me emotional,” she says, suddenly overcome. “So, I think that’s the difference,” she concludes, fanning away tears.

In the next video, Cyrus watches old interviews with her father. “She loves to dance and the more people clap for her the more she’ll dance. I think she’s got the ‘Cyrus Virus,’” Billy Ray Cyrus says of his young daughter.

“Well, I’m just grateful that that was projected into the universe before I could even fathom what that meant. There’s gratitude for that being the energy that was attached to my vessel because it became a reality,” Cyrus responds, showing off that she’s clearly been to therapy.

When reflecting on touring she explains, “If you’re performing at a certain level of intensity and excellence there should be an equal amount of recovery and rest. There’s a level of ego that has to play a part that I feel gets overused when I’m on tour, and once that switches on it’s hard to turn it off. And I think when you’re training your ego every single night to be active, that’s the hardest switch for me to turn off.”

“Having every day the relationship between you and other humans being subject and observer isn’t healthy for me. Because it erases my humanity and connection, and without my humanity and connection I can’t be a songwriter, which is my priority,” she continues.
