Paul Mescal is not here for all of us freaking out over how buff he’s getting for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel.

“With films like this and superhero films, there is sometimes a focus on that, which I don’t find that interesting. Of course there’s a physical robustness required for the character, but past that, I’m not interested,” Mescal told The Hollywood Reporter.

The commotion over Mescal’s muscles started when a video of him working out went viral. Sources believe that the video was originally posted by Mescal’s personal trainer, who has since taken it down, but not before the Internet Gladiators could scoop it up.

The Oscar nominee told Vanity Fair, “I was looking for something—it wasn’t actually to do with scale, but I wanted to pin my shoulders back and step into something a little bit more physical. Literally as I was formulating these thoughts, this came in. And I was like, Oh fuck. This is meant to be or something.”

This all comes at the height of the global Mescal obsession. Earlier this year he starred as Stanley Kowalski in a London revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, where Nicole Kidman allegedly barged into the men’s dressing room after seeing the show to praise the leading man.

“We were in our pants,” Mescal said of the incident. Pants, of course, being the British version of underwear.

We come to this place for magic,” one can imagine Nicole Kidman saying to describe the experience of seeing Paul Mescal in his pants. Hopefully, we’ll all get to say the same when Gladiator premieres.

In the meantime, let the man get ripped in peace.
