As far as parasocial relationships go, musician Phoebe Bridgers and comedian and director Bo Burnham have amassed quite a devoted following. Bridgers, with her introspective and melancholic music, as well as her outspoken nature that led her to publicly support Amber Heard and endorse the right to abortion, has amassed a staggering fanbase. Meanwhile, Burnham has been a pop-culture fixture since his early YouTube days but rose to fame with his Netflix comedy special, Inside, where he critiqued everything from mass-accepted capitalism to white women influencers on Instagram. He effectively dealt a death blow to all Millennials on the cusp of turning 30 and created a genuine banger with “All Eyes on Me.”

Their paths first seemingly crossed when Bridgers covered his song “That Funny Feeling” from the Netflix special. In different scenarios, there’s reason to believe that fans would be overjoyed by their two relatable favs getting it on, but Bridgers (in particular, because women always get the most hate) received major backlash when it was first speculated she might’ve left It boy and Aftersun actor Paul Mescal for the comedian. Burnham had also been in a long-term relationship with Hustlers director Lorene Scafaria.

While we don’t know what officially went down between all parties, it’s yet another reminder that while it’s natural to create some sort of attachment to favorite artists, it’s another thing to invade their privacy or lob abuse at them for not acting in a way that allows them to stay positioned on fans’ preferred pedestal. That said, it is genuinely hilarious that after months of speculation, the closest, unofficial confirmation we’ve gotten is a TikTok posted by Keith Urban of him and Nicole Kidman vibing together at a Taylor Swift concert while Bridgers and Burnham smooch in the background.
