Millie Bobby Brown shared the story of her engagement to Jake Bongiovi in a recent appearance on The Tonight Show—a story she’d previously kept private, but then decided was “too good of a story not to tell.”
“Jake and I bonded over diving,” she began. “We love diving. We got our diving licenses together. And one day, we were out on a vacation, and he was like, ‘Mill, you’ve got to be up at 8 a.m., we’re going on a dive.’” She wanted to go diving somewhere they hadn’t been before, but he took her to their usual spot.
“We go under, and we’re like many meters down. He gives me a shell, and I turn it over, and it’s a ring,” she said. But they were underwater, so it wasn’t like she could scream an enthusiastic “Yes!” and she couldn’t give a simple “thumbs up” either because that’s the divers’ signal for “up,” like let’s get outta here, and she felt giving that signal would indicate, “No, I don’t want to marry you. I want to go up,” so instead she gave him the “OK,” hand signal—universally acclaimed as the most romantic of all the hand signals—which she says was “underwhelming” given the context. But don’t worry, it was about to get more … whelming.
“He puts the ring on my hand and as I go to show him, the ring falls off my finger, plummets so fast,” she said. “Jake threw himself into the water, like, so deep. Like, the diver was like, ‘You can’t do that. Your ears—literally your brain will explode.” She, however, took his bravery as a good omen.
“I truly feel like it’s a reflection of who he is, and I feel like we’re always going to have each other’s back, and if anyone drops the ball, we got it,” she concluded.
Yeah yeah, young love and all that. Maybe get that ring resized, though?
