Grief-Stricken Kate Beckinsale Does Not Care What You Think

Grief is a cold-blooded bitch. It changes a person so completely and so suddenly that they end up spending more time adjusting to their new life than actually grieving the person they’ve lost. When ignored, those feelings can fester and turn against the body. That’s exactly what happened to Kate Beckinsale, who concerned fans in March when she posted cryptic photos from a hospital bed.

Just what led her to be hospitalized was unclear, but we knew her stepfather, former film and television director Roy Battersby, died in January. She posted a number of tributes to him and documented the back and forth with the powers that be at the British Film and Television Arts, who wouldn’t guarantee that he would be included in the in-memoriam segment of their May Ceremony. And yesterday, she explained how the stress and grief of his death led to her hospital stay.

In a video posted to Instagram, Beckinsale can be seen affixing a hair net to her head, explaining she was doing it because some of her followers get mad at her for not doing “age-appropriate stuff.” Some asshole didn’t get the point, though, and commented, “Go do some squats” and “I think ur ass ran away.”

Beckinsale responded with what is quite possibly the best (and most tragic) comeback of all time:
“No, actually, I watched my stepfather die quite shockingly, my mother has stage 4 cancer, and I lost a lot of weight from stress and grief, quite quickly and then I was in hospital for six weeks because the grief had burned a hole in my oesophagus which made me vomit copious amounts of blood, and I found eating very hard and I just worked very very hard on a movie that was actually quite triggering because it also involved the theme of the death of my father so I’m not really concerned about what you think about my ass. Maybe you should worry about your own fucking ass. I suggest shoving something up it—like a large pineapple or a brick.”

Beckinsale is an infamous internet oversharer, no doubt, but this serves as a good reminder that even oversharers—and, yes, even rich and famous ones—still deserve respect. Lest we forget, it’s in her bio: “A fatherless girl thinks all things possible and nothing safe.”
