Gloria Steinem, co-founder of the Women's Action Alliance and a key figure in the feminist movement of the 1970s and beyond, has died at the age of 92.
In a post on Instagram, her foundation announced the news, saying that she had "passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her."
Steinem was a journalist and the co-founder of Ms. magazine. Her work was largely focused on campaigning for women's rights, particularly with access to reproductive justice. In the '60s, she wrote about topics like contraception and her time as an employee of the Playboy Club. In 1971, she was one of more than 300 women who co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus, a grassroots organisation that sought to get more women involved in politics. She was one of the most prominent faces in the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment, and she helped to found Choice USA, a non-profit organization that provided support for young people fighting for reproductive rights.
She continued her work well into the current decade. In 2020, she so-wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Times, expressing their opposition to the elimination of civil rights protections for transgender healthcare by the Trump administration, which was a welcome evolution of her views on trans rights. Her new memoir, An Unexpected Life, is set to be released later this month.
In lieu of flowers, Steinem asked for donations to her foundation, and for her supporters to light a candle in her honour.
