Donna Kelce Says NFL Is ‘Laughing All the Way to the Bank’

I’m sure you’ll agree that the coverage of Taylor Swift going to Travis Kelce’s football games is getting old. Just yesterday, I was on the phone with a friend and I could hear her boyfriend swearing in the background.

“What’s your problem?” She asked him. I heard him mumbling something, then she laughed. “He wanted to watch a football game, but they’re playing the Chiefs game instead of his. He thinks it’s because they think Taylor might be there,” she said. Mike confirmed late last night that no, she didn’t make the trip to Minneapolis for the game against the Vikings. “Why else would they be playing a Missouri v. Minnesota game on basic cable in Maine?” I heard my friend’s boyfriend shouting. Why, indeed?

Donna Kelce, Travis Kelce’s mother, knows why.

“All I can tell you is that the NFL is laughing all the way to the bank,” she said on a recent episode of the Got It From My Momma podcast. “They’ve told me personally that the Kelce family has done more good PR for football than they could have paid $1 million for to a PR firm.” Well, Donna, I would argue that it’s actually Taylor Swift who has done that, but whatever. “It’s just because we’re relatable, we’re just normal, we’re genuine, we’re authentic, and we don’t put any airs on or try to be somebody that we’re not.”

Meanwhile, the NFL defended their obsessive coverage of Swift thusly: “The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we’ve leaned into in real time, as it’s an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we’ve seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport.” Some of that positivity has been newfound interest in football amongst young girls. Donna said that she’s received DMs from fathers saying, “Finally my daughter is watching football with me.”

And they’ve barely even been on a real date yet. I think my friend’s boyfriend is not going to enjoy this football season.
