We’ll be honest. We thought Trump For President was so absurd that none of us bothered to watch his actual announcement. Instead, we enjoyed scouring Twitter for people genuinely excited about the news, and laughing over reports he had to pay people to pretend they wanted to be at his campaign launch. That’s how we missed that Trump made racism a part of his campaign promises.
During his bloviation speech, Trump addressed border control saying of Mexicans, “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” but allowing, “and some, I assume, are good people.”
Despite this half-hearted caveat, Trump’s words pissed off the Latino community, spurring Tweets like this one from Ricky Martin:
Mucho odio e ignorancia en tu corazón @realDonaldTrump. #LatinosUnidos
— Ricky Martin (@ricky_martin) June 25, 2015
(Translation: Much hatred and ignorance in your heart @realDonaldTrump. #LatinosUnidos.)
Alberto Ciurana, Univision network’s president of programming and content, drew a dark comparison between Trump and racist terrorist Dylann Roof in this Instagram post:
The post has been deleted, but Univision, the biggest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., has since announced they are severing all business ties to Trump, including “the company’s business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald J. Trump, based on his recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants.”
This means Trump has lost his distributor to Spanish-speaking nations around the world, so Univision has hit the blowhard with the bonkers blow out right in his wallet. And Presidential Hopeless Trump is taking it like a real champ.
Mexican gov doesn't want me talking about terrible border situation & horrible trade deals. Forcing Univision to get me to stop- no way!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 25, 2015
Univision wants to back out of signed @MissUniverse contract because I exposed the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 25, 2015
I love Mexico but not the unfair trade deals that the US so stupidly makes with them. Really bad for US jobs, only good for Mexico.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 25, 2015
See, guys. When he said Mexicans are criminals and rapists, he was actually taking about trade. He also went to Fox News to proclaim:
“Of course I’m standing by the statement. I love Mexico, I love the Mexican people…I’m going to have to sue Univision now… They have a signed contract…They’ll have to pay me a lot of money.”
And he blames the media for distorting his message, because he totally has Mexican friends, you guys:
“I am personally offended by the mainstream media’s attempt to distort my comments regarding Mexico and its great people. I have many successful business relationships with Mexican companies and employ, and am close friends with, many Mexican people … I do great with Latino voters. I employee so many Latinos, I have so many people working for me. The Latinos love Trump, and I Iove them.”
