This is an old story. But it’s making the rounds again, so I thought we could all share a collective laugh and an “Eeeewwwwww, gross” moment about it.
In 2017, Emma Thompson was a guest on The Graham Norton Show to promote The Meyerowitz Stories with Adam Sandler. During her time on the couch, she shared this story about Donald Trump reaching out to her on the set of Primary Colors to ask if she would go on a date with him.
Trump’s marriage to Marla Maples ended in 1997, and he was on the prowl. A lot of reports of his sexual misconduct are from 1997, because ego-driven men can never be alone, and they think everyone owes them everything.
Emma Thompson’s divorce from Kenneth Branagh was finalized in 1997. It was on that exact day Trump called her with his proposition. Almost like he had a sixth sense for divorcées, or had someone scouring newspapers and court records for potential dating candidates.
The imagery of this gives Jabba the Hutt and Princess Leia in the gold bikini vibes. Yuck.
I’m glad Emma dodged that bullet. But imagine if she had taken the bullet for the good of America? If Donald had been allowed that shining moment in the sun of glorious Hollywood royalty, however brief it may have been, perhaps his ego would have been well-fed enough that he never felt the need to run for president. Perhaps Emma could have pawned him off on one of her friends, and he could have swum laps in the Hollywood dating pool until he died of the inevitable heart attack under some nubile clout-chaser.
Who knows what could have happened? There’s an alternate timeline out there for everything. Including one where there’s a giant statue of Christopher Columbus in the Hudson River, funded by Trump and designed by a Russian artist. Maybe we should have let him have that.
