Meta glasses are gross and only worn by creeps. The tech world's eagerness to turn us all into narcs with wearable cameras that can surreptitiously recording everything is another sign of the end-times. They've drafted in all manner of celebrities, like Kylie Jenner, to try and sell this invasion of privacy as aspirational glamour. But it's tough to overcome the bad press generated by perverts and losers who use the primarily to harass women for social media clicks. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think it's a bad idea to encourage everyone to engage in an endless cycle of surveillance and humiliation for the sake of a few Instagram likes. And Dan Levy is on my side.
The Schitt's Creek writer and star took to his own Instagram page to share his thoughts of the day.
"Why do we need to hide cameras in glasses again," he asked. "Like, what is the purpose of this particular trend of technology? As a lifelong glasses wearer, I cannot think of a single time where I wish I had secret cameras in my glasses. I can, I suppose, empathise with people who explore caves, you know, those people who kinda crawl into small spaces, and even then, I guess, they would need the cameras just to record the experience. But other than, like, some perverts from my high school who would probably want to take some camera glasses into the girls' changing room, I cannot think of a single reason why you would need cameras on your glasses. Just a morning thought!"
The comments are, of course, full people who insist they use it for totally legit purposes, like unboxing videos, which are the lifeblood of our society. It's not weird at all, guys! Yes, smart glasses do have incredible uses for disabled and visually impaired people. Isn't it wonderful that this can be used in such a way? But let's be honest here. Meta is not advertising this product to disabled people; they want everyone to buy them, and most people will not use them for altruistic purposes. Kylie Jenner was not showing off her obscene wealth in first-person because she or Mark Zuckerberg care about helping blind people. Every ad for this crap is focused on the idea of you making #content to go on Meta platforms, and a lot of those people are trying to make bank from non-consensual encounters with harangued women and girls.
Meta clearly knows this, because they're now launching a new version which does not contain a camera at all, called Ray-Ban Meta Audio. They're obviously hoping to make a quick buck on stuff like this before the law catches up with them. In the UK, a number of businesses have already banned Meta glasses. An evil company whose fortune is built on hoarding our data and f**king with algorithms to make us all zombified addicts is hardly going to be concerned with privacy, but we should at least continue making it socially embarrassing to be seen in the pervert glasses. Oh, but you need them to record your morning routine and attempts to hit on women? Fall into the sea.
