In June, Chris Brown was hit with a $13 million verdict after a Los Angeles jury ruled that he was liable for the vicious injuries inflicted upon his former housekeeper by his pet dog. He has allegedly not paid up, and so his victim is preparing to fight for a cut of his tour profits.
Maria Avila was mauled by Brown’s dog in 2020. In the lawsuit, she detailed how she was attacked by a Caucasian shepherd named Hades while emptying the bins at Brown’s home in Tarzana, California. The dog allegedly ripped off “large chunks” of Avila’s skin, leading to permanent facial disfigurement, scarring, vision loss and nerve damage. Avila also said that the injuries left her with physical weakness and PTSD that made it impossible for her to find work as a housekeeper elsewhere. Brown claimed that Hades was not his personal pet but a dog looked after by his security team for protection. Said dog was a breed known for its aggression. During the trail, the jury also heard testimony that alleged that Brown, rather than calling for help for Avila or tending to her himself, fled the scene after she was attacked.
Jurors ultimately sided with Avila, awarding her $12.9 million in damages for physical suffering, emotional pain and medical expenses. Avila’s sister and husband also won damages for emotional distress.
Avila’s legal team filed a motion saying that Brown and his company “have made no effort to satisfy any portion of the judgment” in the month since it was given. “At the same time, Defendant Christopher Brown is presently engaged in an active nationwide R&B concert tour that is generating substantial revenue.” Brown is currently on tour with Usher and doing very well, because multiple charges of violence against women is no biggie for Team Breezy. So, Avila, fairly, wants a judge to order that Brown pay her what she’s owed. In the meantime, Avila says a judge should freeze Brown’s touring accounts to preserve her access to the funds.
Brown’s fans are, of course, being super normal about this. We do not talk enough about how that might be the most toxic fandom on the planet. He beat up Rihanna, has faced multiple lawsuits regarding violence towards other women, was the subject of a restraining order filed by Karrueche Tran, and assaults random dudes like he has a quota to meet, but oh, he’s the next Michael Jackson, you guys! (Just pause for a moment and soak in that comparison.) And he continues to command a massive female fanbase, who find new and heinous ways to justify or dismiss all of this. His dog tore a woman’s dace to pieces and he fled the scene. You think he would give a sh*t about you because you paid $250 to see him sing?
