On October 19, 1998, Cher released the dance-pop single “Believe”. Yep, 25 years ago. “Believe” was a big comeback for Cher’s career, and it’s still her most successful song of all time. And don’t forget what it did for Auto-Tune. To commemorate the milestone, Cher released a special 25th anniversary deluxe album of the Believe album. She also has a new Christmas album, the creatively titled Christmas (please note, the first single, “DJ Play a Christmas Song” is a mercilessly addictive earworm).

This morning, 77-year-old Cher went on The Today Show to promote both releases, and anchor Harry Smith remarked on “how amazing it is” that “Believe” is 25 years old. Here is Cher’s perfect response: “It’s not that amazing, OK? It pisses the f—- outta me… it’s just like, ‘What is this?’” Harry followed up with, “So you and age, you’re not friends?” She replied, “No! My mother didn’t mind, but I do. I hate it.” After Harry admitted he had a tough time turning 70, Cher joked, “I’d give anything to be 70!”

Here’s the interview. The “Believe” stuff is around the 1:50 mark:

Obviously, it would be a crime to not end this article with a video of Cher performing “Believe”. So here’s the Goddess of Pop lip-syncing her heart out at the 1999 American Music Awards:

What fun!
