It’s that time of week again, kids. There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and endless speculation over who will be the next James Bond. For most of the past few months, the prime contender to replace Benoit Blanc has been Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Now, it’s Callum Turner.

According to The Evening Standard in the UK, a source from betting company Coral claimed that bets for Turner have suddenly increased. ‘We’ve been knocked over with support for Callum Turner in our next James Bond betting over the last 24 hours,’ said one source. It makes sense. Turner is young, hot, white, and British, so the laws of probability meant he was always going to come up in at least a few conversations. Reports have suggested that director Denis Villeneuve, who is taking over the franchise (well, as much as Amazon will let him) wants a fresh face for the part, and Turner isn’t so recognizable that audiences will struggle. Frankly, you’ve probably seen him in something and confused him with Miles Teller, Louis Partridge, or five other white brunettes from England.

Turner’s a talented dude. He was in the Fantastic Beasts movies but we won’t hold that against him. You may have seen him in the miniseries Masters of the Air or the most recent adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. He’s going to lead the long-awaited TV adaptation of Neuromancer, coming soon to Apple TV. Also, he’s the future Mr. Dua Lipa.

What started this round of Bond tattle, though? I have a theory. Turner’s newest film, Eternity, is opening in theatres. It’s gotten great reviews and could be a breakout movie for him. Turner is also one of the men featured in this year’s Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair. If you were an agent and you were trying to hype up your talented rising star who doesn’t have household name recognition yet and is still frequently confused for, like, four other actors, how would you make him stand out amid his biggest press push of his career so far? Would you play the Bond theme and hope someone noticed? It’s certainly more interesting than having to constantly remind viewers that he isn’t Josh O’Connor.

We will, of course, continue this endless cycle of Bond speculation until Denis gets those contracts signed. We’ll be pushing and prodding at the stories for months, years even, like a polar bear in a zoo with one deflated red ball. Welcome to the Discourse, Callum!
