BBC Radio Host Danny Baker Fired For Tweet Comparing Royal Baby to Chimp
OK, who had ‘three days’ on the ‘How old will the new royal baby be before the racist bullsh*t begins’ pools? Come get your winnings while the rest of us descend into madness at how f*cking predictable this all was. Yesterday, the world got to see Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor for the first time, and it was nice. Look, a cute baby and his happy parents! Surely we could all put aside our sadness at the state of the world for a few minutes to coo over the adorable babby? Can we at least do that? Ha.
Danny Baker, who’s a prominent television and radio presence in the UK and has been so for many decades, was fired by the BBC today for a now deleted tweet that showed an image of a couple holding hands with a chimpanzee dressed in clothes with the caption, ‘Royal Baby leaves hospital.’ Don’t worry, I have screencaps.
Baker apologized but still claimed he didn’t see the racist connotations of comparing a mixed race child to a chimp. Because that hasn’t been a commonly used insult by racists for decades or anything like that. Baker claimed the tweet ‘was supposed to be about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but [was] interpreted as about monkeys & race.’ He then went on to claim that BBC ‘literally threw me under the bus’ and that ‘The call to fire me… was a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity.’
Doesn’t take long for these creeps to claim they’re the victims here, does it?
Does anyone for a moment believe him when he says he didn’t see the racist connotations in comparing a mixed race child to a chimpanzee? Since Meghan Markle entered the public consciousness as Prince Harry’s future wife, she has been subjected to all manner of racist, sexist and xenophobic harassment and media dog-whistles, as well as the most ludicrous conspiracy theories. Take a gander on Twitter and you won’t have to look for very long to find tweets comparing Meghan to apes, dogs and, yes, chimps. We’ve been dealing with MONTHS of ‘think-pieces’ wondering ‘how black will the Royal Baby be?’ This poor kid, who is less than a week old, has already been the subject of headlines claiming he has the responsibility to ‘unite multicultural Britain’. And now we have to deal with the barrage of horse sh*t that is a failing radio host claiming he’s the real victim after comparing a mixed race child to a literal animal.
Don’t worry about poor Danny Baker. Knowing how depressingly predictable the British media are, he’ll have a new job by the end of the month and will probably be called upon to be a new ‘free speech warrior’ for any right-wing rent-a-gob who has nothing better to do.
