Three days ago, Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested by US Marshals after British authorities issued 38 new charges against the pair. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service said that Andrew, the full-time misogynist and once-time failed kickboxer, was being charged with seven further counts of rape, as well as charges relating to sex trafficking and indecent images of a child. Tristan, his full-time goon, faces charges of rape and arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation. The total number of charges against the brothers is now 59, according to the local authorities.
The Tates appeared in a courtroom in Miami, facing extradition to the UK where they could face a very long prison sentence. Their lawyer claims the charges are “a stitch up job” and compared them to proceedings against another accused sex criminal, Donald Trump. The men also face numerous charges of trafficking and rape in Romania, and are on the receiving end of a US civil case from a woman who alleges that she was coerced into sex work by the Tates.
The extradition process should, under normal circumstances, be a seamless process. Durham Law School Associate Professor Gemma Davies told the BBC that it was “relatively rare” for an extradition request between the US and the UK to be refused. It can still be a lengthy wait, however, and we live in a world where the President feels he can do whatever he wants with impunity. The charges in Romania may also complicate matters.
