Today in internet transcendence, the creepy top-hatted creature of 2014’s sublime horror-thriller The Babadook has arrived as a gay icon. Oh, I’m sorry. Did you think the story of a widowed single mom dealing with her grief and problem child was the text of this movie? That’s very heteronormative of you.
Vulture traced the roots of this fan theory to last October, on Tumblr, because of course:
From there, the idea of Gay Babadook took root, and just in time for LGBTQA Pride month, he’s coming out as the queer icon he truly is. Just ask the gays.
During pride month let's not forget to celebrate this gay icon, we luv u babadook â¤ï¸ðŸ’›ðŸ’šðŸ’™ðŸ’œ pic.twitter.com/mHsw5cnPwY

Someone mentioned the babadook in class and it took all of my minimal self-control to not immediately scream "a gay icon"

I haven't bought my Babadook hat for pride yet and, like a haunted suburban Australian family, I am freaking out https://t.co/0s6PerNlT1

Weird that most of Comey's testimony is about how the Babadook became a gay icon

Babadook slander will NOT be tolerated in this house. Cinematic masterpiece AND gay icon. Not the ally we wanted but the ally we deserved. pic.twitter.com/iRHyzDT067
