Will There Be a Season 2 of 'The Act'?

Well, friends, that’s a wrap on The Act season 1, which revolved around the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard at the hands of her daughter Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nicholas Godejohn. The show was a huge success for Hulu, so while there hasn’t been an announcement for season 2, it’s a no-brainer and expect the green light to come soon.

(Also, see the fact-checking for episodes 1-2, episode 3, episode 4, episode 5, episode 6, episode 7, the finale, and what the Real Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard (and Others) Look Like)

So, what could season 2 focus on? There are two likely options, which I’ve outlined below:

Continuing With Gypsy Rose Blanchard

Season 1 of The Act glossed over Gypsy Rose and Nicholas Godejohn’s respective trials, which could be where the bulk of season 2 takes place. Additionally, Gypsy Rose was finally introduced to her dad in the last episode of season 1, and their subsequent reconciliation and his advocacy for her could be an interesting plot point. The show has explored (extensively) Gypsy Rose’s relationship with her mom but what about her dad? In real life, Rod has a change.org petition asking the governor of Missouri to pardon Gypsy, which you can find here.

The second season, if focused on Gypsy Rose, could also explore a question the HBO doc Mommy Dead and Dearest posed: how much of Gypsy Rose’s behavior is an act itself?

What that means is — we know what kind of person Dee Dee Blanchard was, but how much of Dee Dee is in Gypsy Rose? It could be an interesting angle to explore if they decide to focus on Gypsy Rose Blanchard again in the second season.

That said, there’s another viable option…

A Different True Crime Story

There is no lack of true crime stories to pick from to focus The Act on next season. If that’s the case, I hope they keep the leads on in some capacity, because Patricia Arquette and Joey King absolutely nailed their parts, here, and I personally would like to see them take on a new role in this series.

I won’t begin to guess what story they could possibly tackle…ok, that’s a lie. The Golden State Killer would be my pick, as there’s a clear resolution to the story (the killer was finally captured, decades after his last murder) with a lot of interesting periphery characters to portray, and a fantastic book to base the season around, I’ll Be Gone in The Dark. In a perfect world, they’d center the show around Michelle McNamara, who wrote I’ll Be Gone… and worked tirelessly to solve the mystery before her untimely death (before GSK was captured.)

Either way, like I said in the opening paragraph, I have no doubt in my mind that Hulu will greenlight a second season of The Act. It’s just a matter of what it will be based around.
