OK. Here are your nominations for the 70th Annual Emmy Awards. Let’s start by talking about THE GOOD: The Americans got some well-deserved love; Game of Thrones dominated; I don’t think a lot of other people did, but I loved Godless, which also dominated — along with The Assassination of Gianni Versace in the Limited Series category — and Sandra Oh for Killing Eve. The Handmaid’s Tale also got a huge amount of nominations, all the performers of which deserved them, but like Westworld, I’m not sure season two belongs in the Best Drama category this year, especially because it meant leaving out Killing Eve and Halt and Catch Fire, which was apparently shut out. That’s a damn shame. As is the snubbing of Timothy Olyphant in Santa Clarita Diet (that was a masterful comedic performance, y’all). Atlanta deservedly got a lot of love, as did lesser seasons of both Stranger Things and This Is Us.

There is so much content that nominations are invariably going to converge around a smaller number of shows because not even Emmy voters can be expected to see everything. A certain level of popularity is important, which means that shows like Counterpoint or, say, The End of the F—king World are going to get shut out. I am surprised, however, that Mindhunter didn’t fetch a nomination, because that seems right up Emmy alley.

The biggest snub, however, has to be Late Night with Seth Meyers, clearly one of the three best late-night talk shows (along with Sam Bee and John Oliver). Also, it’s a shame there was no room for Brooklyn 99 this year.

Anyway, here are the nominations and we’ll have more thoughts on them later today.
